Volkskeuken (= community kitchen) van Heden is a social project we organised weekly from September 2016 to February 2017.

Two supermarkets in the neighbourhood of Ledeberg, city of Gent, agreed to provide us with their waste food for this cause. Several days of the week we would wake up at 7am and cycle there to get all the out of date or not-so-pretty-anymore products. This we carry on the bicycle cart and the tricycle.

Together with an enthusiast group of volunteers, each Tuesday we would prepare a big feast from garbage. In the evening, people from the neighbourhood could come together at Tuin van Heden (Meierij 178) to enjoy a free-donation meal and share ideas.

Through the Volkskeuken we tried to demonstrate that the ‘waste’ generated through economic logic can still be utilised, providing a good meal for many people. Also we brought people together in an informal context. Sharing a meal is common to every culture/ community.
